Ethylene plays a role in the postharvest life of many horticultural crops. Ethylene is a colorless gas with a faint sweetish smell that is naturally produced ripening hormone.
It is also produced as an exhaust gas from petrol combustion engines The senescence of the produce is accelerated and can cause great commercial losses.
The AiroFresh®-line of products is very effective in minimizing the damaging effects of ethylene. The ethylene is reduced to water and carbon dioxide. The AiroFresh® keeps the ethylene levels as low as possible at all times.

Normal application parameters of AiroFresh®

AiroFresh® is a process and takes time to facilitate the result including ethylene removal. If the unit is flooded with excessive airborne contaminants such as very rotten fruit or large particle sand/dust, etc. it will stop working due to coating contamination. These units are constructed to be capable, self-cleaning and robust. AiroFresh® is one of the very few air purification systems that can remove ammonia. A difficult compound, due to its hard molecular shell.
For ripening rooms the ethylene gas should be vented and then AiroFresh® activated to “hold”the produce. A great benefit for growers of kiwi fruit, banana, etc. that become high ethylene producers once “woken up”.
Keep in mind when using 1-MCP or any other ethylene blocker, you have to wait minimum 3 days before to activate the AiroFresh® as otherwise the 1-MCP will be destroyed.

It is advisable if units are installed they are best activated to:

  •  Clean up latent fungus/mold spores or resident contaminant, even cleaning residues before and during storage.
  •  Air flow in any enclosed storage is important.
  •  AiroFresh® is cheap to operate and made to run for many years. Once a year the unit needs to be serviced (the lamp is for +-8,000 hours) and the coating must be renewed.

Unlike chemical applications that deteriorate in efficiency from the moment they are applied.
